SUSP aims to make you feel valued. Our awards are a way of demonstrating our approval and gratitude to highlighted members of the psychiatric community. Below are numerous awards we hope to bestow individuals who have impacted their community and/or celebrate their achievements. Awards are presented during our annual meeting to highlight their success in our Society.

Albert J. Glass Award


During WWII, COL "Al" Glass helped change the perception of psychological stress in combat during the Korean War, ultimately providing a framework that is still the cornerstone of military psychiatry. These concepts are proximity, immediacy, simplicity, and expectancy. Widely published, Dr. Glass represents the best of military psychiatry.


Bestowed to a military psychiatry resident for excellence in Medical Research.

Thomas Salmon Distinguished Service Award


Thomas W. Salmon proposed broadening the specialty of psychiatry to move beyond traditional institutional care and into preventative mental health care and rehabilitation. He is one of the earliest key advocates for mental health reform movements in the United States.

 

This award is bestowed to a SUSP (non-executive) Member for lifetime contributions to military psychiatry.

Medical Student Travel Award

To invite and enable medical students interested in military psychiatry the opportunity to receive travel assistance to attend an upcoming American Psychiatric Association (APA)'s Annual Meeting.



This award is bestowed to a medical student based on their accomplishments during medical school and a demonstrated interest in practicing Psychiatry in the military.

Excellence in Operational Medicine Award

As the saying goes for a military psychiatrist, "you wear two hats." One hat expects you to be a fiduciary to your patients and their mental health, while the other is an obligation to the greater good of the force. A good psychiatrist knows when to switch between roles, a great psychiatrist knows how to enact both simultaneously.


This award is bestowed upon an operational psychiatrists to recognize and honor their unique contributions and sacrifices to the military mission.

Submitting nominations start every January to and ends every February annually. After receiving the applications and deliberation, the Award winners will be announced at the Annual Triservice Conference. We hope to see you in the pool of nominees.
