SUSP Appointed and Associated Positions


Job Descriptions and Responsibilities


Appointed Positions

Membership Chair (MC):


1)  Approval of prospective members new to APA.

2)  Assist transfers from other District Branches to SUSP.

3)  The point of contact for membership questions.

4)  Provides the membership report at the annual meeting.

5)  Attend the annual SUSP Tri-Service Psychiatry Conference held in conjunction with the annual APA conference. 

6)  Participates in monthly SUSP business meetings by telephone/VTC and ad hoc meetings as required.

7)  Complete tasks assigned by the President.

8)  One year term

Election Chair (EC):


1)  Manage the Elected, Appointed and Associated Leadership Responsibility Roster. 

2)  Work closely with Next Wave Group (NWG) with the whole election process. 

3)  After NWG collects and count the ballots, the Election Chair will verify the numbers, then will announce the outcome at annual SUSP Tri-Service Meeting.

4)  Participates in monthly SUSP business meetings by telephone/VTC and ad hoc meetings as required.

5)  Attend the annual SUSP Tri-Service Psychiatry Conference held in conjunction with the annual APA conference.  

6)  Complete tasks assigned by the President.

7)  This is a one-year term appointed by SUSP President.

Ethics Chair (EC):


1)  Directs the activities of the ethics committee, oversees the handling of ethics complaints, and participates in ethics-related meetings convened by APA.

2)  Attends the APA meeting of District Branch Ethics Chairs once a year at the Annual Meeting.

3)  In the rare situation when an ethnical complaint requires an ad hoc Ethics Committee to be formed, the Ethics Chair will coordinate one, composing of two or more members of SUSP.

4)  Attend the annual SUSP Tri-Service Psychiatry Conference held in conjunction with the annual APA conference. 

5)  Participates in monthly SUSP business meetings by telephone/VTC and ad hoc meetings as required.

6)  Complete tasks assigned by the President.

7)  One year term


Professional Education Chair (CC):


1) Organize, plan, and execute the educational mission and tasks of the SUSP

2) Plan the SUSP Tri-service meeting

3) Complete tasks assigned by the President

4) This is a one-year term appointed by the SUSP President. 


Associated Positions

Next Wave Group (NWG):


1)  Provides selected association management services in the areas of governance, communications, events, membership and finance.

2)  NWG services include an executive director who participates in Board meetings/calls and APA Executive Staff meetings/functions. 

3)  Provides communications services, including phone, mail, e-mail, web site, and publications.

4)  At the APA Annual Meeting, NWG coordinates the logistics and staffing for the Tri-Service Conference (including CME), reception and SUSP annual meeting.

5)  NWG also coordinates membership approvals and manages the Fellows and Distinguished Fellows.

6)  Financial functions include accounts payable and receivable, posting, and reporting.

Psychiatry Residents Outreach Chair:

*formerly Resident Representative


1)  Liaison between Uniformed Services psychiatry residents and SUSP.

2)  Ensure that residents are aware of SUSP activities, awards, opportunities, and events.

3)  They also provide input on what is important to residents to the Executive Committee.

4)  Participates in SUSP business meetings by telephone/VTC and ad hoc meetings as required approximately once every two months.

5)  Attend the annual SUSP Tri-Service Meeting and reception held in conjunction with the annual APA conference.  

6)  Complete tasks assigned by the President.

7)  This is a one-year term appointed by SUSP President.

Medical Students Outreach Chair:


1)  Liaison between Uniformed Services medical students (HPSP and USUHS) interested in psychiatry and SUSP.

2)  Ensure that medical students are aware of SUSP activities, awards, opportunities, and events.

3)  They also provide input on what is important to medical students to the Executive Committee.

4)  Participates in SUSP business meetings by telephone/VTC and ad hoc meetings as required approximately once every two months.

5)  Attend the annual SUSP Tri-Service Meeting and reception held in conjunction with the annual APA conference.  

6)  Complete tasks assigned by the President.

7)  This is a one-year term appointed by SUSP President.

Knowledge Management Officer:


Leads communication and IT responsibilities for SUSP.


Knowledge management is the process of enabling knowledge flow to enhance shared understanding, learning and decision-making. 


1) Provide the right information to the right person on the SUSP leadership team and members at the right time and enabling the following:

a: Culture of knowledge-sharing and collaborative work flow among SUSP leadership

b: Capture and provide learning metrics for various SUSP activities in order to improve the organizational behavior

c: Design and pilot knowledge management solutions

d: Support and coach SUSP leadership on knowledge management tools to improve workflow and communications

e: Oversee and supervise general membership and general public communications and tools including the SUSP website

f: Maintain and archive organizational practices and tools to enable agile and efficient practices


2) Use KM best practices such as those outlined in ATP 6-01.1 (Techniques for Effective Knowledge Management) available at https://armypubs.army.mil/ProductMaps/PubForm/Details.aspx?PUB_ID=105059


3)  This is a minimum of one-year term appointed by SUSP President but longer term commitment is encouraged to ensure continuity and organizational cultural depth.
