Not Just a Rash: Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions to Psychiatric Medications


Talk Objectives:

(1) Express awareness of various life-threatening Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions (SCARs);
(2) Identify psychiatric medications that predispose one to develop a SCARs;
(3) Recognize cross reactivity between certain psychiatric and neurologic medications;
(4) Explain individual risk factors that predispose a patient to SCARs;
(5) Describe the psychological implications for survivors of SCARs.

Childhood Experiences & Life Lived: The Triumph of Good Over Evil?


Talk Objectives:

(1) Know the literature and be able to recognize the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on adult health outcomes;
(2) Recognize the alignment of health disparity consistent with the geographic racial boundaries and the historical events that have driven these boundaries in many American cities, with Baltimore as an example;
(3) Define the potential impact of the growing field of epigenetics resulting from ACEs and its potential impact on subsequent generations;
(4) Identify Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and their mitigating effects on ACEs; and

(5) Describe programs that have been specifically designed to mitigate ACEs in children and the benefits that may be associated with the military community to assist parents and children.

DARPA: Novel Approaches to Detecting, Healing, and Preventing the Invisible Wounds of War


Talk Objectives:

(1) Discuss how Event Related Potentials may be used to overcome the confusion and challenges associated with answering questions about mental health in general and suicidality in particular;
(2) Describe how combining generalized and targeted neuroplastic techniques could potentially be used to increase cognitive flexibility and emotional regulation to augment current therapies;
(3) Recognize how noninvasive neuromodulation may address REM sleep disorders associated with PTSD.

Evaluating Adults for ADHD/Autism: How to Screen and When to Refer

(1) Recognize key historical factors that can help diagnose or rule out ADHD and ASD in adults;
(2) apply interviews and rating scales when screening adults for ADHD and ASD;
(3) discuss how individual and gender differences affect diagnoses of ADHD and ASD and the lack of research in this area overall; and
(4) identify common rule-out diagnoses
